What's Included

Fundamentals of Public Participation (P2)/Engagement—required first course on IAP2's Global Learning Pathway— establishes the shared foundation for effective public participation practice. As a prerequisite for all other IAP2 courses, it introduces the core principles, values, and frameworks that guide engagement practice across the IAP2 community. Participants explore what meaningful and effective public participation looks like in practice, examine best practices, and apply foundational concepts to real-world engagement contexts.

Designing Public Participation/Engagement builds on the Fundamentals and focuses on the Design and Plan phases of IAP2’s Practice Framework. This Level 2 course supports practitioners who are responsible for shaping engagement processes and want greater confidence in making clear, inclusive, and defensible design decisions. Participants develop an engagement plan for a real-world scenario. The course explores engagement scoping, identifying potential participants to be engaged, setting clear purpose and objectives, selecting Spectrum levels, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and analyzing and responding to risks—while considering equity, inclusion, and the needs of diverse audiences.

Applying Methods zeros in on the Plan phase activities in the Practice Framework in which practitioners select, develop, combine, and evaluate methods. Participants explore and gain hands-on experience with a variety of methods used around the world. They identify and evaluate objectives for engagement methods, develop questions to guide and obtain participant input, prepare communication messages, design and combine methods. Participants leave with strategies and resources they can use to engage people and groups. This course is suitable for practitioners who are part of a team implementing a P2 process and are looking for the practical skills to be effective in developing and applying methods.
